Mission Statement

The California natural landscape is valuable, spatially variable, and changing rapidly; interacting with this is the state’s complex social fabric. This workgroup seeks to be a clearinghouse for information and innovation in training, tools, research and outreach surrounding the measurement and understanding the consequences of landscape-scale changes, and assisting in planning for sustainable growth. We have focused on remote sensing and GIS methods, which are increasingly used by planners, natural resource managers, and extension colleagues, but we also discuss other mechanisms and tools needed to face the new challenges of managing California’s rapid growth, while sustaining our natural and agricultural resources.

In short, this ANR workgroup - Monitoring Landscape Change - has been created to provide:

  • communication and networking opportunities among ANR members and related workgroups interested in using or currently using GIS/Remote sensing techniques in natural resource and agriculture management;
  • in-service training for ANR colleagues in methods for monitoring and analyzing landscape change;
  • collective and multi-disciplinary research opportunities; and
  • extension and outreach activities for ANR colleagues.
