Background:
I received my B.A. in Biology from Williams
College in 2003,
where I performed a senior honors thesis characterizing a putative promoter
in the oncogenic plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens. My summer
positions have included an inventory of amphibian species of Hopkins
Forest in Williamstown, MA, and a stint as a protein purification technician
in the Infectious Diseases department of Bristol-Myers
Squibb. I am currently
a graduate research associate in the Kelly Lab (while I get my MS at UC Berkeley's School for Information, where I work with the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Project. In the past I have worked on geo-referencing
and webGIS duties relating to the California
Vegetation Type Mapping
project and data processing tasks relating to Sudden
Oak Death and the
California Oak Mortality Task
Force).
Research Overview:
My academic interests span the biological gamut, from
molecular biology and genetics, through ecological interactions
and landscape-scale phenomena, all the way to astrobiology and
the origins and distribution of life in the Universe. Of course,
I've also become interested in GIS and remote sensing, especially
in biological applications. Isolating specific research interests
is one of my current goals. I also dabble in web design and programming
for fun and profit.
The California Vegetation Type Mapping project is an effort to digitize
and make available a huge collection of vegetation data collected in
the 1920s-30s. The original project involved sampling plots from all
over California and performing species inventories, taking photographs,
and generating vegetation maps. My task in the current incarnation
of the VTM is to scan and geo-reference the original plot maps, and
eventually make the data available on the web. This will provide an
invaluable resource to those researching the ecological history of
California and to habitat restoration projects.
