Watershed Research

Watershed influence on streams and wetlands. Does the land use in a watershed influence the quality of a stream running through it? Can activities on upland areas change downstream habitat? The obvious answer to these questions seems to be yes, but sorting out how the watershed impacts downstream quality and habitat can be tricky. For example, impacts from long ago might play a larger role than current impacts. This is what Dr. Kristin Byrd documented in her dissertation research. In addition, land transformation impacts streams at a variety of scales, and understanding how diverse upland activities contribute to instream habitat changes is difficult. Dr. Faith Kearns worked on this problem in her dissertation research.

Riparian Restoration. How effective are fishery restoration projects in Northern California? We were involved in a project that sought to develop a set of protocols for monitoring the effectiveness of upland, riparian, and instream habitat restoration projects and biological responses, and to develop a web application for users to access these protocols, as well as the data generated by protocol usage, through a spatial representation of watersheds and riparian corridors.
